Last night's men's basketball game against Kansas University served as a reminder of how far the Aggie basketball program has come in the last 3 years. I sat there in Allen Fieldhouse in Lawrence almost 4 years ago and watched Bernard King and the Aggies get practically run out of the gym by Kirk Hinrich and Nick Collison. The Ags had a grand total of 18 points at the half and were the punchline to many jokes in the crowd.
Fast forward almost four years later and Billy Gillispie brought a Texas A&M team ranked number 8 in the country, having only lost to two highly ranked teams (UCLA and LSU) and Texas Tech in Lubbuck. Kansas, ranked 6th, had never lost to a Big 12 South team on their home floor in 9 years and was 11-0 all-time against A&M in hoops.
For much of the night, it looked like KU was going to dominate again. A&M got absolutely killed on the boards 40-29, with KU getting way too many offensive second chances.
However, something is different about this A&M team. They do not quit and do not get intimidated. Perhaps playing in tough environments like UCLA and LSU earlier this season is to thank, but Acie Law and the rest of the Aggies refused to pack it in when KU was up 57-46 with 9+ minutes left in the game. Instead A&M went on a 17-4 run in a hostile environment on national television.
To cap the run, Law drained a huge three pointer over KU's best player, Brandon Rush, and with it, slammed the door on more Aggie basketball demons.
The shot gave A&M an eventual 69-66 victory and served notice to the rest of the country that deep in the heart of Texas is a team with a HUGE heart and a never give up attitude.
Next up is t.u. and Kevin Durant on Monday night.
Here's a great story on the game on ESPN.com:
